A great improvement from the last two books, the plot was more cohesive and had a clearer them compared to the last two.

A pleasant introduction to the Witches of Discworld.

If you've read any fantasy I doubt you'll find anything new in the story. It's fairly typical but where this book really shines is in its humour and the characters. Pratchett delivers a spoonful of humour with every page which helps an otherwise mediocre book go down well.

The relationship between the two main characters, Esk and Granny Weatherwax, is enjoyable and reads like a hot cup of cocoa on a winters day. It grows further as you get into the book and you can start to see the beginning of something great. Unfortunately this book doesn't quite hit the heights it could have.

"If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly."

Not Pratchett's best work, but I still had a solidly good time with this. This is only the third book in the Discworld series and it does read that way. Like the other early books, it's mostly a satire of common fantasy tropes, this time focusing on the chosen one with special powers cliché, complete with rustic home village, a training montage, and a powerful heirloom passed down from an elderly mentor figure. But this chosen one is *gasp* a girl. And not just a girl, a girl who practices the decidedly male form of magic known as wizardry. As the storyline unfolds, the book explores the arbitrarily gendered division of magic with rational and intrusive wizard-magic on the one side and intuitive subtle witch-magic on the other. Through this, we start to get a little taste of the thematic depths that Pratchett delves in his later books, though this one seems to only dig out a few tentative spadefulls. Still, it's an interesting reflection on how many professions become gendered in some way (think male doctors and female nurses) and also made me wonder why this trope of female vs male magic exists in some other fantasy stories. So yeah, if you want to skip the first two Discworld books (which are generally seen as weaker, but are still loads of fun in my opinion), this wouldn't be a bad starting point for Discworld.
