A fun, engaging read reminiscent of the classic novels of Roald Dahl. This unique premise will appeal to all children (and most adults who just want a quick read). Although the climax and resolution are predictable, the characters are well-developed and the dialogue is humorous. Bethany’s snarky wit is the perfect complement to Ebenezer’s prim and proper disposition, and it’s entertaining to watch them interact and mature as they develop a strong friendship. I will be passing this on to my own daughter and reading the sequel with my third grade class next year.

Whimsically dark with a touch of macabre humor to it. Bethany gives Horrid Henry a run for his money, all the while sassing off a beast that would love nothing more than to eat her whole.

A good quick book for those that love chaotic plots and humor with a little bit of naughtiness to it.

What a fantastic, fabulous book The Beast and the Bethany is. I was hooked from the first page. To kick off the story with the statement that Ebenezer Tweezer is 511 years old but only looks twenty will undoubtedly grab your attention. We quickly meet Bethany and the Beast, although I wasn’t entirely sure which one was the beast. Bethany is an obnoxious orphan who will never find a family to adopt her with the attitude she displays.

The story moves at a steady clip that rarely gives you time to catch your breath, let alone put the book down. The humor is dark but so very entertaining. There are several twists to shake up your emotions while changing your idea of just where the story is headed. The book info says middle-school, but this grandma loved it. I think it will appeal to all ages from about 10 years old and up.

The book has wonderful illustrations provided by Isabelle Follath. They capture the essence of the story while adding a touch of reality to the scenes.

I sincerely hope you will order a copy of this book. Even though it won’t be released until later this fall, you don’t want to take a chance on forgetting it.

It’s that good!

adventurous dark mysterious

This hilarious Middlegrade book features a 3 eyed monster who eats well, everything, and his handler/enabler, Ebenezer Tweezer. When the beast decides it wants to eat a child, Ebenezer finds the nastiest, naughtiest one he can at the local orphanage. Ebenezer just needs to fatten Bethany up for a few days before the beast eats her. That is just enough time for the two to start to understand each other and devise a plan to get rid of the beast. This is a funny, entertaining read with shades of Rosld Dahl.

Fun read! Definitely deserves its place as a nominee on our state reading list. Reminiscent of Roald Dahl and full of the very British silly humor that I love. Looking forward to the next installment!

Ah, the lovely wickedness of despicable characters narrated with wry wit. A triangle of unique individuals, one of whom might just be despicable enough for the other two to bond in opposition and seek redemption. Enjoyable from the first page to the last. Very reminiscent of Roald Dahl, Lemony Snicket, and Neil Gaiman.
