I have pretty much no feelings on this book. It was fine. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing special, just kind of there I guess. It’s a lot like some other books so it’s possible this book just got unlucky being a book I read after many others. I was hoping the trans aspect would make it more interesting, but it really didn’t add THAT much to the story somehow. It just was only okay.

This book has two things I love: music and a queer love story. -1 for the cheating

A beautifully layered tale of finding your joy while finding your identity. Unafraid to show the good and the bad of this journey, physically and mentally along the way.

Underhill’s debut is well plotted, with care for all the characters flowing through each page. Characters are complex, unabashedly show. This was a real delight all around.

Super sweet but never sappy, Always the Almost takes us on the journey of Miles (formerly Melissa), as he navigates his new identity, feelings for his ex (straight) boyfriend, and a possible new (gay) one. Honest yet affirming, a gem of a YA coming out story/romance.

Pure joy. A story of figuring out who you are when everything feels do off and being able to find joy in yourself. I loved Miles and all his friends from start to finish.

No spice, but not unrealistic for the age group either. There is still plenty of making out and talk of the potential for more, it just doesn't take place on page.
