I didn't realize how much I'd missed Brandon Sanderson's writing until I read this book. As his first novel, I was expecting something that was just not as good as his other novels. I was ferociously proven wrong. Elantris is a wonderful masterpiece that I wanted to read again as soon as I finished it, if only to look for more foreshadowing and details I may have missed the first time. I foolishly took a while to read it, reading a few dozen pages one day, skipping a week, and then reading a bit more, and I didn't really get into it until yesterday. It did take a little bit to get into, but I think that was just because of the whole mystery surrounding the story. Sanderson's books remind me of a mystery novel where you only get a few pieces of the puzzle at a time. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming to try to figure out the secrets of the world they live in and the magic system at the same time as trying to decipher the plot and the intricate stories going on inside said world. That being said, that is also the thing that pulled me in and made me unable to put down the book in the past 48 hours. The story was as captivating as the characters, which are obviously Sanderson's specialty. Raoden, Sarene, and Hrathen are the main characters, and they held my attention throughout. Sometimes when you have multiple perspectives in a novel, I find myself skimming through the bits of a character that I don't like as much. In this book, I never had that happen. Hrathen was probably my favorite character because of how interesting he was. I really enjoyed reading his parts because of how logical he was and how much thinking he did. I loved them all for different reasons, everything from the rebel nobles and Sarene's uncle to the noblewomen learning how to fence. It was all fantastic. My heart weeps knowing I could never write something as great as this. I loved every page.
I have so much to thank one of my best friends for, but introducing me to Brandon Sanderson's writing is at the top of that list. So thanks Matt Stoll. For Sanderson's first novel, he sure knows how to shake the world. I really hope there will be a sequel someday, but I was very pleased with the ending. (Also, I was ecstatic when Hoid showed up!)
