This is my third read and I can finally put my finger on what annoys me about this otherwise great series... The good guys never go on the offensive. They let Simon attack over and over again, conceding the initiative. I'd think a god of martial arts would appreciate the advantage of offence, rather than solely relying on defense. Send the monkey king out hunting, or something.

Wow definitely more intense. Stayed up late to finish this one. What you expected to happen does happen but not in the way you think.

Unlike the other two books, once this book gets fast it stays fast - almost to a dizzying degree. There was so much going on at times that I felt a bit lost, I admit. The ending was satisfactory for the series, and definitely designed to keep the reader reading. I don't know whether or not I'll keep reading - I definitely want to know what happens with Emma/John, but there are enough pacing/character inconsistencies that I'm kind of on the fence as to whether or not I'll be continuing.

I still love the characters in this - Emma is such a good protagonist! I do think she's still a bit too much of a Mary Sue, but there are things in this book that she either can't immediately do or full-stop can't do, which was nice. My favorite relationship is still Emma and Leo. Honestly, the biggest plus for this series is all of the Chinese mythology and the relationships between the characters.

Simon Wong/One Two Two's conflating sexual orientation and gender wrt Leo is...wearying. Let's go with "wearying".

3.5 stars. A good ending to the series. I found my self almost crying at the end. In some ways, I thought some parts dragged on a little too much and did not find the book in general as enjoyable as the first two. But I thoroughly enjoyed the ending and I am looking forward to reading the next series.

A great series with action, mythology, and just the right dash of romance to make it right. Really hope she's working on the 4th book.

Notes:

The concepts & use of myths/etc are great. This is one of those deals where I wish the author had a better support system of editors/readers/etc because there are editing errors, grammar issues and story inconsistencies.

The third book in Ms Chan’s rip-roaring yarn of gods and demons, magic and science and martial arts, lives up to the promise of its predecessors and more. Our heroine Emma battles to discover her true nature and protect the daughter of the man she loves from the demons who would get at him through her death, while he, a 3,000-year-old God, struggles to retain enough energy to remain on the mortal plane and protect them both. Chan has a wonderful way about her writing where it just pulls you in and you literally race through to find out ‘what happens next.’ Filled with romantic tension, humour and vivid Matrixstyle martial arts action and magic, Chan opens up Chinese mythology to the Western mindset in the most accessible way I’ve come across.

This series is a lot of fun.
