All-New X-Men, Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men by Brian Michael Bendis

For being advertised as a great jumping-on point for the X-Men, there was a lot of reference (sans explanation) to events in AvX and characters from the mythos who don't appear to be huge players. There were also a lot of two page layouts that weren't immediately apparent as such which kept me guessing (wrongly) as to the panel reading order. While the conceit is fascinating, it relies way too heavy on literally explicitly the smartest character in the book doing something colossally dumb. But, meh, comics.

After all that, however, it's the X-Men and at least Bendis knows how to write Iceman well.

Loved the art work on this, and the idea of the OG teenaged X-Men meeting the current, ginormous, messed-up group is pretty sweet.

It's gonna take a while to get used to reading graphic novels, I think..

Actually, the reason I started reading this was that I wanted to read the Guardians of the Galaxy crossover with this comic, and I found out my library had all the volumes leading up to the crossover.

It's an interesting idea - seeing the younger X-Men interact with their current selves. Enjoyable enough to read up to the crossover, but I probably won't look for the stories beyond that.

It's strange to jump into X-Men from here, especially with having spent more time with the Ultimate version than anything else. I don't really know what to make of it, to be honest. It's a strange read that (I think) has similarities to the newer X-Men movie, but I spent less of the time engaged and more of it frustrated than anything else.

I think I'm just not loving the Marvel Now imprint at all.

I wasn't 100% impressed with Bendis' story here. I'm willing to give it some time for everyone to find their voice.
Immonen is lauded as a master artist, but I must not be "getting it" here.
Gripes aside, this is an interesting start and I'm willing to read further.

Great introduction to the world of X Men for me. At times I found it a little hard to follow, but thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless!
