This is both heavy and light.
The setting is beautiful, a mix of big city and small town, but mostly small town.
The characters took a long time to grow on me, to be honest, and I wasn't thrilled with the first 15o pages or so of the book. I just felt too disconnected, and didn't care about Caroline, or the other characters at all. I wasn't interested in her life as a fashion designer in the big city.
That, and anxiety over the general state of things are probably the reason it took me so long to finish this.
I did cry at one point, but not from the content, just the heaviness of some of the subject matter. Normally crying at a book gives it an automatic 5 in my rating system but I'm sticking with a 4 on this one.
There were other things that irked me, like the jumping back and forth of the story lines. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't and it didn't work this time, for me.
I also found it wierd that Will was married to Sierra and his father had a girlfriend named Shasta. Both are mountain ranges in California (at least partly for the Sierras.) and this detail just bugged me for some reason.
I did enjoy Will and Caroline's evolution, and I woudl be interested in reading more about them going forward.
This is my second book by this author and I'll definitely be reading more by her in the future.

Another Susan Wiggs book that didn't disappoint. It had me hooked from the beginning. Just a great book with a great storyline. I didn't want to put it down.
Overall, I can say that I enjoyed this book. I wanted to continue to read it to find out what was going to happen next. I wish some parts were more developed and some of the transition were a little jarring. It was a good quick read.
Wonderful story
Really really loved this one. It's the perfect read and I made it through in three days, and I really look forward to reading it again.

I have no idea how this book got on my TBR, my hold list, and then my library loan pile, but I’m glad it did. It’s quite beautifully written, a bit of a love story and much of a motherhood story.
Caroline says she’ll be the ‘back-up guardian’ for her friend’s kids in the midst of a crazy time, which isn’t a big deal until her friend overdoses and she becomes the full-time guardian. Caroline never wanted to have kids, and now she has two. A 5 year old and a 6 year old who just want their mama. They’re scared of so many things and rightfully so.
Caroline moves them across the country to her hometown where her parents take all three in for some love and some healing. There’s a huge sewing element to this book, an important domestic violence story line, and the beauty of friendships and really listening to women.
When a woman comes to us because of an abuse, an assault, or anything else, our first line shouldn’t be “got proof?” It needs to be more of “I’m listening” and “It’s not your fault, how can I support you?” And any number of other statements that convey empathy and trust for the woman.
I really liked this book, but there were a few parts where things skipped around a bit too much. It’s very closed door, but some of the leaps she makes from “they looked at each other deeply” to “she woke up in the middle of the night in his bed” felt awkward. So ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

A wonderful story that deals with a very difficult topic.

I received an ARC from a Goodreads GiveAway for this book.
The book will be released 8/13/19, so this will not be a complete review, rather just a general feel for the book.
Caroline Shelby has loved sewing since she was a little girl and becomes part of an elite New York design team as an adult. Because of certain circumstances, Caroline returns home to her West Coast hometown of Oysterville, Washington. Throughout the book you'll learn about her childhood friends, family and the dreams she has and had for her life. You'll see how what you thought you wanted from your life can change and adapt to include your dream. You'll love Caroline for her integrity, character and courage.
I was not expecting the underlying subject matter of domestic violence in this book, but it was weaved into the story line perfectly and realistically. You'll notice on the cover of the book it says: We believe you. We believe in you. These few words are extremely important because so many are not speaking up for fear of others not believing the abuse that goes on behind closed doors.
Once you start reading this book you won't want to put it down!
Thank You Susan Wiggs & Goodreads!!
