Emma di Jane Austen è un romanzo divertente e coinvolgente, che racconta le avventure amorose di Emma Woodhouse, una giovane donna bella, ricca e intelligente, che si diverte a combinare matrimoni per le sue amiche, senza accorgersi né dei propri sentimenti né di quelli degli altri. Il libro è una satira della società inglese di inizio Ottocento, dove la vita si svolge tra feste, picnic, visite e pettegolezzi. La Austen descrive con ironia e finezza i personaggi, le abitudini, i pregiudizi e le ipocrisie dell'epoca, creando situazioni comiche e imbarazzanti. Il romanzo è anche una riflessione sul ruolo della donna nella società, sulle sue possibilità di scelta e di realizzazione.
Emma è una delle poche eroine di Jane Austen che non ha bisogno di sposarsi per garantirsi una posizione economica e sociale all'inizio può risultare viziata e altezzosa ma nel corso del romanzo impara a conoscere meglio se stessa e gli altri, a correggere i suoi difetti e a trovare la sua felicità.
La trama è a volte lenta e ripetitiva, alcuni personaggi sono poco approfonditi o stereotipati, il finale è un po' scontato e affrettato tuttavia Emma resta un capolavoro della letteratura inglese, che merita di essere letto e apprezzato. La morale che si può trarre dal libro è che bisogna seguire il proprio cuore, ma anche ascoltare la propria ragione, per non cadere in errori e illusioni.

I’ve read several of Jane Austen’s books but was unsure how much I’d enjoy Emma when I first started. But I ended up enjoying it way more than I expected. Emma was so cruel & unfeeling early about the whole Robert Martin bit with Harriet. But I really liked her growth & development & loved that Knighly wasn’t afraid to point out her shortcomings. He was also great at being willing to change his mind a bit about Frank Churchill too.

I read the audiobook with Juliet Stevenson narrating and her interpretation of Mrs Elton was so wonderful. I highly recommend this version.

Now off to download some movie adaptations!

Still working on reading audiobooks so felt like I didn’t fully ingest the storyline as got distracted a few times. 4 ⭐️’s for what I did listen to.
