To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
My thoughts are all jumbled, but let me review this duology overall by starting with the positives.
Marie Lu has a very simplistic writing style which I feel like works really well in most of the books I've read by her. Because of this, I think her descriptions of the vivid colors of Tokyo and other vast landscapes are the best part of this series.
I genuinely don't regret reading this duology and I think they are worth reading at least one time, if you are a fan of the whole virtual reality thing.
Now onto the the negatives...
I started this book with some extreme hesitation and nervousness. I've seen mixed reviews of Wildcard which prevented me from picking it up. But alas, my buddy Jez was ready to pick it up so I decided to read it with her.
The first 60-100 pages were pretty meh. Then it got REALLY exciting, all the reveals had me on the edge of my seat, flipping the pages. I had to KNOW the answers. And then the last 25% of the book had me feeling MEH all over again. It was boring. It dragged on. The ending especially dragged on.
There are so many things wrong with this book. Lack of character development, lack of uniquely crafted characters, lack of world building, so many plot holes and things that just don't make sense, the cringey romance, I could go on and on.
Oh and how many times are we going to mention the fact that the main character has RAINBOW HAIR?? Ffs. This was disappointing.

It was okay. I struggled reading it I honestly could have put it down and walked away. But the writing was phenomenal so I stuck it out. Good conclusion and ending to the series.
Phenomenal series!! Very inventive.... If you enjoy Ready Player One Elements of VR than you are in for a treat.... Great character arc all around and you feel apart of the Phoenix Riders .... This is the second book in the series and both are solid reads.
3.5 stars. So the things I called in the first book didn’t play out the way I expected in the second, which was a nice surprise. I loved the conflict in Emika. She seemed to have no choice but to join forces with Zero knowing he was violent and untrustworthy. But she also had to work against Hideo, despite her feelings toward him. It made for some interesting dilemmas.
I also liked that Emika finally allowed herself to let others in and to let them help her. She realized that working alone isn’t always possible or smart, and I liked seeing her grow in that way.
These books were fun and the second one especially had some twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting.

So we have even more twists and turns in the second installment I didn’t think my heart could take it but it was such a fun ride.
Really enjoyed the world of this duology. I was kind of sad that we didn't see so much of the Warcross game in this novel. Similar to the first book, this was also a quick and easy read for me.
I kept thinking how is this going to wrap up? I was happy now she tied up most of the loose ends.
5/5
When I thought the first book couldn't get any better, this elevated significantly. The plot twists, the suspense... Loved it.
