Reviews with content warning for Drug abuse - Anna Karenina

The development of Anna, Vronksky, Kitty and Levin is very interesting, and shows a real in-depth understanding of the human psyche. While some of their struggles are particular to the time it is set, others are still relatable. It shows an accurate perception of dealing (or not dealing) with one’s troubles with mental health. Supporting characters are also well developed, giving a sense of familiarity, although the length of the book could be reduced somewhat by slightly less development of lesser characters. Personally less interested in the religious complexities but it does give good context to the time and situation in Russia.
Listened on Audible to understand the emotions felt by characters better than reading extended descriptions and thankful for it.

Book Review Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (1877)

This book has been recommended to me for a very long time: some praised, some despised, my mom says it should be read only later in life. But despite all that I haven’t seen any criticism on it coming from a common reader. I believe any book must be criticised (thus the literature serves it’s purpose), so if you happen to enjoy Anna Karenina, I’d advise you not to proceed.

There are two issues I need to address: writing style & plot structure.

It startled me that you can find “shining gray eyes, that looked dark from the thick lashes” and four “smiles” per page, which makes it a perfect material for a drinking game.

Proceed further with caution!

The novel begins with an illustration of life losing any meaning - Darya Alexandrovna Oblonskaya (Dolly) learns her husband Stepan Arkadyevich (Stiva) is cheating on her.

“You remember the children, Stiva, to play with them; but I remember them, and know that this means their ruin” (P. 1, ch. 4)

After a while Anna Karenina herself comes to rescue and talks Dolly into eventual forgiveness, without downplaying her feelings. Thus we see a sensible woman capable of empathy.

"God knows whether they are fully reconciled," thought Anna.."Oh, nonsense, Dolly, always making difficulties," answered her husband. "Come, I'll do it all, if you like...""Yes, They must be reconciled,""I know how you do everything… You tell Matvey to do what can't be done, and go away yourself, leaving him to make a muddle of everything..""Full, full reconciliation, full," thought Anna (P. 1, ch. 21)

Then she meets count Vronsky, eventually stars a new family and they travel abroad together.

We all know who’s committing what in this novel, we heard the person will be turn between their child and a lover, unable to bring them all together to one family. What we don’t know is how abruptly Anna changes as a character. I prefer fictional women acting reckless, slowly seeming mad in others’ eyes.

Here I see a smart woman turning hysterical during two or three chapters and gets jealous over nothing.

“He looked at me with a cold, severe expression. Of course that is something indefinable, impalpable, but it has never been so before, and that glance means a great deal.. That glance shows the beginning of indifference." (Ч. 6, гл. 32)

Her motivation to end her life is to prove something to Vronsky.

“And death rose clearly and vividly before her mind as the sole means of bringing back love for her in his heart, of punishing him and of gaining the victory in that strife which the evil spirit in possession of her heart was waging with him” (P. 7, ch. 26)

Do I have to explain how toxic that is? Where is the woman fighting for her own happiness? There are very few scenes Anna vs the society, which end with Anna crying.

And then I heard Tolstoy was practically forced to finish this book, because he was paid in advance.

So, what do we praise here? A pretty cover or an author dumping a character in a very toxic way? There are Russian classic books with definitely less misogyny outthere.

The best subplots in this novel apparently are there by accident: Kitty Shcherbatskaya (my favourite character) gets better by helping the sick and this experience helps her later in life, meets her best friend. At the same time Dolly is concerned with her husband’s behavior and meeting Anna, who’s can’t no longer have kids, is an important encounter for her.

"Well, and the most legitimate desire--he wishes that your children should have a name." "What children?""Annie and those to come...""He need not trouble on that score; I shall have no more children.""How can you tell that you won't?""I shall not, because I don't wish it. The doctor told me after my illness...""Impossible!" said Dolly.For her this was one of those discoveries the consequences and deductions from which are so immense that all that one feels for the first instant is that it is impossible to take it all in, and that one will have to reflect a great, great deal upon it. (P. 6, ch. 23)

This book is an interesting example of historical fiction. But I don’t support swallowing it cause you must.

Мама говорила, что ее стоит читать только в старшем возрасте, знакомые читали и восхищались, некоторые считают нудятиной. При всей ее популярности, в моем поле ее толком не обсуждают критически. Я же считаю, что критиковать нужно все и вся (иначе зачем пишем?), поэтому, если Вам нравится этот роман, не читайте дальше, сберегите нервы. Или напишите, чем именно он Вам нравится.

Произведение вызвало у меня вопросы по двум направлениям: слог, которым оно написано, и сюжетная структура.

Меня поразило, что в эталонной классике рядом встречаются «Блестящие, казавшиеся темными от густых ресниц, серые глаза» и четыре «улыбки» на один абзац - если пить чай всякий раз, когда кто-то кому-то многозначительно улыбается, можно и спиться.

Роман начинается с иллюстрации потери смысла жизни - Дарья Александровна Облонская (Долли) уличает мужа Степана Аркадьевича (Стива) в измене:

«Ты помнишь детей, чтоб играть с ними, а я помню и знаю, что они погибли теперь» (Ч. 1, гл. 4, стр. 19) [«погибли» в смысле «пропали», «столкнутся с тяжелыми проблемами»]

Пока суд да дело, приезжает сестра Стивы, Анна Каренина (в девичестве Облонская) и умудряется уговорить Долли не рубить с плеча: вырисовывается портрет сдержанной женщины, умеющей проявить эмпатию и поддержать.

«"Бог знает, вполне ли помирились?" - подумала Анна...- Ах, полно, Долли, все делать трудности, -- сказал муж. -- Ну, хочешь, я все сделаю..."Да, должно быть помирились"... - Знаю, как ты все сделаешь, ... скажешь Матвею сделать то, чего нельзя сделать, а сам уедешь, а он все перепутает..."Полное, полное примиренье, полное", -- подумала Анна» (Ч. 1, гл. 21, стр. 109)

При драматичных обстоятельствах Анна Каренина встречается с Вронским, офицером c определенной репутацией. Постепенно они так же драматично сближаются, Анна уезжает с новой семьей за границу. И вроде бы все хорошо, но маргинальное положение тяготит Анну - и я понимаю, что нелегко быть отрезанной от общества, неофициальной парой.

Параллельно развивается более счастливая история младшей сестры Долли, Катерины Щербацкой (Кити). В нее влюблен Константин Левин, буквально влюблен вот так:

«Понятие о ней было для него священным воспоминанием, и будущая жена его должна была быть в его воображении повторением того ... святого идеала женщины, каким была для него мать» (Ч. 1, гл. 27, стр. 140)

Подобное обожествление женщины крайне токсично: «сам придумал, сам обиделся, что твой идеал не соответствует действительности». Привожу только одну цитату, но Левин в целом размышляет схожим образом:

«- ...Положим, ты женат, ты любишь жену, но ты увлекся другою женщиной...- Извини, но я решительно не понимаю этого, как бы... все равно как не понимаю, как бы я теперь, наевшись, тут же пошел мимо калачной и украл бы калач». (Ч. 1, гл. 11, стр. 60)

Автор на ваших глазах сравнил живого человека с калачом.

Кстати, если меня кто-то спросит, за чьей историей мне было интереснее наблюдать, я сразу отвечу, что за Кити Щербацкой (не ее мужа).

Подобные моменты извинительны для литературы XIX в. и должны быть прокомментированы в отзыве 2022 г. Хочу заострить ваше внимание на дальнейших событиях:

Мы знаем, кто решит покончить с собой в этом произведении: мы слышали, они будут метаться между сыном от первого брака и любовником, т.к. не могли сохранить и то, и то.

Значительно реже мы слышим, что героиня Анны Карениной претерпит сильные изменения буквально за несколько последних глав. Я обожаю истории, где женщина бросается во все тяжкие, перестает казаться нормальной и до глубины души им сочувствую.

Здесь же я вижу, как прекрасная героиня за две-три главы превращается в истеричку и на ровном месте ревнует любовника к гипотетической невесте.

«Однако что же он сделал?.. Он посмотрел на меня с холодным, строгим выражением. Разумеется, это неопределимо, неосязаемо, но этого не было прежде, и этот взгляд многое значит... Этот взгляд показывает, что начинается охлаждение». (Ч. 6, гл. 32, стр. 981)

Вронский амбициозен, надеется на репутацию в свете. В то же время Анна не может ни отказаться от сына, ни полюбить дочь от Вронского. В результате, история, которая должна была выйти в драматичные переговоры и противостояния, внезапно обрывается, когда Анна решает покончить с собой:

«И смерть, как единственное средство восстановить в его сердце любовь к ней, наказать его и одержать победу в той борьбе, которую поселившийся в ее сердце злой дух вел с ним, ясно и живо представилась ей». (Ч. 7, гл. 26, стр. 1108)

Развязать руки, спасти от позора - это эгоистичные, но для художественной литературы вполне приемлемые оправдания довольно дать дуба. Наказать же, помирая, физически невозможно, просто потому что ты уже все.

Вместо годной трагедии на порыдать в подушку, мне преподносят слитую героиню. Почему Толстой не может заставить меня искренне сочувствовать Анне? Он не в состоянии проявить эмпатию и привести героиню в по-настоящему безвыходное положение, затравленную со всех сторон? Но я не могу полностью отказать ему в эмпатии, ибо тут встречаются забавные шутки...

«Какая разница между мною и государем? Государь делает развод -- и никому оттого не лучше, а я сделал развод, и троим стало лучше... Или: какое сходство между мной и государем?...» (Ч. 4, гл. 22, стр. 640)

...И упоминания внутренней кухни разговора между влюбленными:

«- Ну, ну, так что ты хотел сказать мне про принца? Я прогнала, прогнала беса, -- прибавила она. Бесом называлась между ними ревность». (Ч. 4, гл. 3, стр. 536)

Не потому ли, что Толстой, как самый обычный человек, выбирает, кому посочувствать, а кому - нет? Только речь идет о писателе, об одиозной фигуре «за все хорошее, против всего плохого»? И будучи эдаким гуру иметь очевидные двойные стандарты - некрасиво. В русской литературе много хорошего и менее мизогинного добра, чтобы всерьез рассматривать Толстого, как обязательную основу.

Я слышала, что также считается некрасивым маскировать нон-фикшен под художку. Здесь же признанный классик заворачивает тематические эссе в обложку художественного произведения. Уже просто развожу руками.

Самые лучшие эпизоды, как я понимаю, затесались в роман случайно. Кити преодолевает апатию, помогая больным на водах и там же заводит лучшую подругу, в будущем этот опыт помогает ей не растеряться. Также есть линия Анны Карениной и Долли, убитая поведением мужа.

«- Ну, и самое законное - он хочет, чтобы дети ваши имели имя. - Какие же дети? - Ани и будущие... - Это он может быть спокоен, у меня не будет больше детей. - Как же ты можешь сказать, что не будет?.. - Не будет, потому что я этого не хочу... Мне доктор сказал после моей болезни. - Не может быть! - широко открыв глаза, сказала Долли... Открытие это, вдруг объяснившее для нее все те непонятные для нее прежде семьи, в которых было только по одному и по два ребенка, вызвало в ней столько мыслей, соображений и противоречивых чувств... Это было то самое, о чем она мечтала еще нынче дорогой, но теперь, узнав, что это возможно, она ужаснулась». (Ч. 6, гл. 23, стр. 939)

Как эти второстепенные линии могут навести на более адекватные мысли, чем кидаться кому-то назло под поезд.

Рекомендую ли я Вам эту книгу? Как один из образцов исторической литературы - почему нет? Там много интересных персонажей, много забавных сцен. Буду ли я Вам пихать ее в глотку, как единственно возможный способ приобщения к русской литературы? Ни в жизни.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this book. It is so much more than a romance. I suggest that you read it as an ebook if you aren't fluent in French. The translation had many French phrases which you need to comprehend in order to understand the conversations between the characters.

Funnily enough, my first introduction to Anna Karenina was through my favorite children’s series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. According to one of the characters, “The central theme of Anna Karenina… is that a rural life of moral simplicity, despite its monotony, is the preferable personal narrative to a daring life of impulsive passion, which only leads to tragedy." I always knew I wanted to read the book eventually, but the idea of reading Tolstoy has always felt daunting.

On the surface, this is a story about family, loyalty, and love. Looking deeper, though, the books acts as social critique on a variety of topics that include family duty and relationship, (in)fidelity, the purposes and realities of marriage, societal reputations and the jealousy within social groups, hearing vs. understanding, political reform, self-centeredness vs. others-centeredness, gender inequality, hypocrisy, faith, ideas on industry and progress, and the contrasts between country living and city life.

The character stories are riddled with metaphor and allegory, with outside events aligning to inner attitudes and occurrences. Just one example is a country house where one of the families resides for the summer. A character promised their spouse that the house had the necessary work done in order to comfortably reside in it. Upon arriving, though, the rest of the family finds that it has nice curtains and décor while the functional parts of the house have fallen into a state of disrepair. The situation with the house mirrors several of the marriages in the book; one spouse thinks by making things look all right, they will be better, while the other spouse is left to deal with the consequences and/or do the major repair work.

While there are a few places where the story was slow (agricultural information, anyone?), there was a LOT to take in! Multiple characters with great arcs and evolutions, dramatic events, and plenty of commentary about Russian culture make this a book to be savored over a longer period of time. (Aka, this isn’t a book to stay up all night reading, but rather something to read in smaller chunks so that you can take your time, analyze, consider, and reflect.)

On a surface level, this is a domestic (and often sad) story about individuals, but the revelations and emotions apply to the greater world around them.
