After careful consideration, I'm dropping this to a two star book. Just too many implausible moments to rate it a three. Gideon may end up being a good character but many of his abilities just seem to come out of nowhere. This is the first book with the character so I guess other things could be revealed down the line but since I really enjoy their Pendergast series, I was expecting much more from them. The one good thing I can say is it was a quick read.

Fast passes and a quick read. Not bad. Not amazing. Not my favorite genre of books, but I'll most likely try the second in the series.

I had read a few books by Preston and Child before this one, I remember enjoying Riptide and really not liking Wheel of Darkness - one of their Pendergast books. This one falls in the middle.

The overall feeling I got was of a YA story, mainly because of the pacing. Feeling like a YA novel isn't necessarily bad, but things happen one after another and characters change their minds on a whim, it's just all so unconvincing.

I suppose I enjoyed the story enough, Gideon's tricks through acting were fun, and the pacing did allowed a fast read. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but if someone expressed interest I wouldn't discourage the read.

having read douglas preston and lincoln child's joint and individual books for years, i was disappointed in this book. i was interested to see how this new series would develop but there were so many up/downs i couldnt enjoy it. i finished it, but very unlikely to read any future of this series.

Another great series from these 2. Loved it!!!

No. Just . . . no. Not good.

Average thriller

Preston and Child - always suspenseful, always gory. Interesting characters, some unbelievable actions from Gideon, but overall enjoyable.

I really enjoy the story-telling of Preston & Child. In this story Gideon Crew is a one time thief and current respectable Los Alamos scientist that has a mission to complete. His dying mother told him that his father, a disgraced scientist, was a scapegoat and was really innocent. He has planned for ten years to carry out revenge on the responsible party, his father's boss. Crew carries out his revenge with precision and looks forward to a quiet future but his activity has been monitored by a independent party. For Preston & Child fans, Eli Glynn is a character that has appeared in several novels and is re-introduced. They want Gideon to carry out a very special task that is both dangerous and challenging. The only question is can Gideon get through it in one piece?

The twists and turns are a wonderful story and in the end you might be surprised how it turns out. I look forward to reading more of these types of stories.

Lots of fun. A really good thriller.
