sorryyyyyyy for doubting u hayley, this was actually a surprisingly good YA debut. the GLG music video was the blueprint, no one was doing it like hayley in 2015 and for that she is mother. GLG u will always be famous

this book is sooooo intensely teenage angst. it deals with coming out, internalised homophobia, societal pressures, complicated and 'untraditional' family dynamics, mental health, suicide (peripherally), and generally does all of it with a tender and careful hand. coley and sonya aren't the most special or unique girls in the world, but i think their everyman personalities are honestly what make the book so easily relatable. you might not have had the same experiences with loss or grief or family, but surely we've all experienced that teen angst, that first love, that confusing mess of hormones and world ending dramatics. i respect the decision to make sonya kind of unlikeable at times, to make the wrong choices and have so much internalised shit to work through; sometimes we're not the best version of ourselves to the people we love when so much loathing is directed inwards. yeah she's kinda toxic at times and there's like sooooo much underage drinking in this book but i think it ends in a better place, not the final destination but maybe the first step.

this book is all small town vibes, riding a bike on a dirt road, nothing to do but drink and hang out with people you're not sure you like, etc. it's very peak teenage summer, and actually a great companion to/expansion upon the music video. thank u hayley

Bookclub has ended so I can now write my review!

This was... fine. Honestly it was an okay read. I felt myself getting bored about half way through. The writing is kind of bad, it's very basic. I was hoping for more poetic and lyrical writing.
Coley and all the other characters were so annoying. The romance is very insta attraction/ love at first sight.

I had never watched the music video before reading this so I saved it till I was done reading the book. The music video is captured in near perfect detail so that was great.

The book takes place in 2006 and there are a lot of references to that in the book, but sometimes the characters felt more modern.side note: were teenagers really drinking absinthe and doing drugs casually at parties? lol

I ultimately wish the book would have explored more of the grief aspect and how her relationship with her dad progressed.

Cute. I had low expectations and only read it because I remember when the music video came out and the impact it had. Obviously not a masterpiece but I still enjoyed it for what it was and just took it as kind of fanfiction for the music video which made it more fun to read. I liked Coley but Sonya was really unlikeable. Considering this was a YA romance, the romance part was the weakest part. I really just liked Coley's relationship with her dad and inner turmoil. The actual romance parts were just frustrating but I guess that's what comes with being an adult reader reading YA romance now

I loved this.
Thank you Lesbian Jesus.
Please write more queer books

As a lesbian do I even need to say that I loved this!? I mean come on a book based on one of the best sapphic songs written by lesbian Jesus herself, this book is literally everything! This book had me on a roller-coaster of emotions. I was sobbing and it hurt so much but in the absolute best way. I really don't think I can say anything new about this book. It was fantastic and you just need to go read it right now!
