Coley is new in town and Sonya is the first person to welcome her. They develop an unlikely friendship which blossoms into more, but only one of them can come to terms with that. For an LGBTQ+ coming of age story, it’s brilliant. It shows people in different places on the spectrum, in different chapters in their coming out stories, with different levels of acceptance or support or struggles. As for the romance, I feel like not enough is done to make up for the hurt that has been caused, and that’s my only issue. My favourite character is Coley, a grieving, mixed race, queer woman who is coming to terms with her identity, and my least favourite character is Trenton, who represents homophobia and misogyny. I recommend this book because I will always recommend books featuring queer women of colour. This book perfectly captures how it feels coming to terms with your sexuality especially as a teen or young adult. I love Hayley Kiyoko, her song Girls Like Girls means so much to me as a bisexual woman ‘And now I know: to go through life unknown when you’ve had a taste of the other side is a lot more bitter than sweet.’
