Not what I was thinking. Just dull, really, really dull. Definitely could not hold my attention.

I wish there had been more closing to the relationships the book focused on. The ending was abrupt and didn’t really finish the story I felt. I really like YA books but this felt especially young for the most part.

This was beautiful. I have never read a teenage romance like this and I was stunned by it. The four stars is because just objectively the writing and pacing of the storytelling was only okay, but the characters were so full and real. I got very tearful during the later chapters because the growth of Coley and Sonya was just so heartfelt and genuine. And I absolutely adore that the message was that you have to love yourself first and then only accept love from someone who can love themselves and you honestly. That is not a common message in any romance novel regardless of the audience they are going for and I wish we saw that more.

Can only hope we keep getting more beautiful books like this from publishers and that kids can find themselves represented in them. Love is love.

Girls Like Girl is a perfect summer read for when you're in your stressy & depressy YA mood. Based in the world of the music video of the same name, Hayley Kiyoko's book follows Coley, over summer break, who has moved to her Dad's in the middle of nowhere after her mum's suicide. She meets Sonya and her friends and feels a connection verging on more than friendship with Sonya.

You can tell very quickly this book was written by a songwriter, it's very lyrical in its language which can be beautiful at times but also slows the pace down too much at others. I liked Coley overall, I know I'd relate a lot to her in my teens. I liked that we got Sonya's side of things through the LiveJournal posts too.

I did enjoy this book but it felt like part of a larger story that I wish we'd got to see. It really is an extended version of the music video which is a little disappointing. If you like lyrical prose and summer angst though, this is for you. I'd love to see another book from Hayley Kiyoko but with a bit more depth and resolution cause the writing style is gorgeous.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!

This book means so much to me! 15 year old me watched the music video every night before bed. I always wondered what the story behind these girls were and I finally got an answer to it❤️‍🔥
I was scared to read this book at first because of some negative reviews. I thought it might take away the feeling I have about the mv, however I only love it more now. Is this a perfectly written book? No, probably not but it is perfect to me

I will say I wished to love this book more than I did but overall it was a solid read.
Lets start with Coely. Her character was a classic case of crappy childhood. with a dead mother and forced to move in with her deadbeat no-show of a father in a town she had never been to before she is definitely struggling.
Then there is Sonya. The eldest daughter of a relatively put-together family and a dancer at heart. She is funny and nice but the way the world around her sees her feels more important than any of that. The group of friends she has are jackasses for the most part if you ask me which definitely affects her behaviors.
One of my favorite characters in the book has to be Coley's dad Curtis. Though he failed her in the past seeing him try to be there for her in any way she wants and can accept is heartwarming. throughout the book, he keeps showing up, keeps trying to talk to her, and helps her feel at home. Though I am not trying to dismiss the crappy things he did before you can tell that he has good intentions at heart.
Now to the reason I didn't love this book (spoiler alert)... the ending pissed me off so much, I didn't want them to end up together ngl. The entire book is Sonya messing up and hurting Coley by the way she is choosing her friends over her and pushing her away the second she gets a little to close and it was just so annoying. The last three or four chapters kind of made me want to throw the book across the room.

overall, I will say that though the themes of mental health, suicide, and feeling responsible for the death of a loved one are very present and hard at times I think it is a nice solid read.

I loved the variety of characters! Truly a heartwarming book that covers some real and serious issues. I loved the insight to the two main characters!
