Good, if a little predictable at times, but overall very enjoyable!

From the cover and title I expected this to be a really serious epic fantasy and so I was not expecting it to be what it actually is- light-hearted and fun but with epic khung-fu fight scenes!
Taishi was an awesome character to follow and, though he was definitely frustrating at first, I did also grow to like Jian.
One critique I would have is that I felt like there weren't really enough stakes for most of the book, meaning it did take me quite a while to finish as there wasn't a lot drawing me in at first but, once I did get into it, it was a really fun ride.

Wow. I didn't know what to expect when picking up a martial arts fantasy. However, I absolutely loved this book! The characters are all well rounded. The world is so intriguing. The plot, while loose, is quite good. I really enjoyed every aspect of this book! I can't wait to get to the second book.

What a page turner! I honestly couldn’t put this book down once I really got into it.

Wesley Chu is excellent at painting epic fight scenes for your imagination to soak up. I really enjoyed following these characters and their growth throughout the novel. There are a few loose threads that I hope will be delved into more deeply as the saga continues.

If you enjoy wuxia style films, consider picking this book up. It truly is a love letter to the genre and is well written with some charm and humor to boot. I caught myself chuckling more than a few times throughout.
