It's well written and extremely detailed with it's world building but I didn't care all that much about any of the characters aside from Jian. I found him to be the most interesting, so when we were focused on other povs I just couldn't focus as heavily. Not to mention the first 150 or so pages were EXTREMELY strong while the rest fell a bit flat. All the action scenes capture my attention; they were tense and full of aggression, however the rest was a little slow, especially when it came to the political intrigue

Felt like a YA novel, with many poorly used tropes and a very predictable plot. Also, the characters (Qisami) was very annoying.

I loved the premise, and the overall style. The world felt enormous, well built, and like one book was only enough to give a small snapshot of it.

And yet… it tried to do too much. It tried to focus on three protagonists, two religions, a dozen alien environments, several magic types, and more. And that meant it’s wasn’t able to focus on any of them. It was only able to provide a glimpse. That meant that a lot of things felt under explained and therefore hard to follow or reason about, and a lot of characters were under developed. I was only able to remember maybe four or five of the dozens of characters.

Beyond that, the violence was a bit over the top — I quickly became desensitized to all the killing — and the fight scenes hard to follow, trying and not quite succeeding in threading some middle ground between describing the mechanics of the fight and making up terms to allow imagination to take over. And the fights really had an over use of deus ex machina endings, where the plot armor just became a bit unbelievable.

Good, if a little predictable at times, but overall very enjoyable!
