“Lance, good things do not come to those who wait, they come to those who agitate.”

Audiobook review. Narrator: the author. Book group pick 2020, my suggestion.

I loved this book. There were so many fascinating aspects of the story - the more personal one is that my grandmother also had polio, so many of the things that Mrs. Black went through helped me to understand what my grandmother dealt with.

A second personal connection is the fact that I also live in San Antonio and am familiar with the places Dustin talks about.

At times this was a difficult read, but throughout it, there was always hope. As the mother of a gay son, I owe a debt to all who fought for the right to marry the one you love. I was stunned by how close this right might never have been recognized, if Black and others had waited. The timing was perfect. I doubt same-sex marriage would be approved by the current Supreme Court today.

good but it felt a bit self righteous and there was a weird tendency to compare lgbtq+ struggles to minorities struggles. maybe i was reading too much into it

I hate saying I DNFed a memoir because that feels rude, but I did not like the audiobook (which feels even worse because the author is reading it rip so sorry) tbh didn’t really care to hear the author cry about his moms hard work surviving polio for 14 hours. I’m sure she’s a lovely woman.
