This is the second novel I've read by Jennifer Robson and I enjoy how she brings to life what it would have been like to live in London during the Blitz as well as the challenges of being a female journalist in the 30's and 40's. An easy read and enjoyable story.

3.5 rounded up because I love Jennifer Robson so much. Better than the average WWII historical fiction. I enjoyed the little details of life in the Blitz and what it was like for women journalists. The slow build romance between Ruby and Bennett was pretty good too. Great friends that don't really get together until the end of the book. This is another book that fans of Code name Helene should enjoy (a book that featured another British woman journalist, but based on the life of a real person rather than 100 per cent fiction).

My only tiny complaint about this story is, that I'd have liked Ruby and Bennett to have a bit more time together once they met again (before the obvious happy end).

The action begins in 194o, when the American magazine is asked to send a female correspondent to work with PW mag in London. Ruby Sutton is chosen because she has the dubious honor of being the only woman who meets her boss’s qualifications: she has no one—no husband, no parents, no siblings, no extended family—who will care if anything happens to her. In London, Ruby experiences the Blitz firsthand. Soon a personal loss leads her to the folks who become her makeshift family and most loyal friends. During the remaining war years, our plucky, sympathetic Ruby blossoms as a writer, falls in love with a kind but enigmatic soldier, and learns much about true courage, sacrifice & being thankful for the small things in life. The story ends with the characters celebrating the Victory in Europe & looking to the future with hope.

I soooo enjoyed this novel. The writing & narrator’s performance (Saskia Marveland) transported me to London during the war years. Each morning, I was actually eager to hop in the car & start my long drive to school so I could listen. And I loved the ending!!!

It did take me a bit to get through “Goodnight from London” - mainly because my only reading time was just before bed. Stories set in WW2 era are some of my favorites and this one offered a different perspective from that of a female journalist. The author has done some wonderful research as well that is included throughout Ruby’s tale.

There are some areas I feel the author could have explored the difficulty of being a female reporter more in depth, and at time the story seemed to jump and lag a bit since it takes place over five years, but overall a story of courage, determination, and the meaning of family.

I really enjoyed this book. Written from Ruby's perspective, this was an interesting look at life in London over the course of WWII as experienced by an American journalist. Her losses and loves will draw you in. Wonderful!
