Mailer’s poetic rendering of the summer of the moon landing is as much a feast of words as of imagery. “Moonfire” is a beautiful coffee table book incorporating Mailer’s commissioned experience of the 1969 moon landing and incredible photos from the Apollo 11 mission. And in the voice of ‘Aquarius’, Mailer’s nom de plume, his third person narration of the events leading up to Apollo 11, the mission itself and the post-mission period are contrasted with Mailer’s own experiences and commentary - sometimes personal, often political, and sometimes philosophically disparaging of the Apollo program itself. “Moonfire” is a marvellous peek into the sensibility of the summer of 1969, wryly and honestly told. A stunning book for any Apollo lover!
