A fantastic and atmospheric story set on a coastline I truly know and love. It centres around a group of friends in their youth and a tragic event which follows them all and deeply effects their later lives to the point where it can no longer be contained, The cracks start to show as the original group all start being killed with the fear that nobody knows who the perpetrator is and where they will strike next.
As ever with Ross’ books I love the deep and intricate characters who are carefully built up with many dimensions and fully rounded backstories and personalities.
The forensics and technical aspects are spot on and added into the storyline to make it extra believable and enjoyable but at an excellent level that all can understand without it feeling like a lecture or being patronising. This, for me, really adds to the authenticity of the storyline as do the detailed backstories and mental, health journeys of the characters. Even with the supposedly bad guys Ross shows the complex aspects that have made them act the way they do and the cumulative affects of their own struggles with themselves and in society and the failings therein. This is excellent food for thought and a challenge to the often black and white debate of good versus bad. There is always an aspect of all the characters the reader can identify with in some respect which truly immerses you in the story. I also couldn’t second guess the conclusion which kept me racing, enthralled, to the end.
As mentioned previously I love the seascape and the backdrop of the events, the addition of folklore and sea shanties associated with the environment also make for a very enjoyable well rounded tale with it’s touch of the mysterious. The deep respect for the unpredictability of the sea and its power also comes across brilliantly. Excellent read and absolutely recommend.

With a better editor, it would have been a better book. The author’s need to tell the reader that several of Norfolk’s finest resembled celebrities got old very quickly.

Death on Cromer Beach is the 1st book in a new series by Ross Greenwood. It's main character is DS Ashley Knight. It's a great start to the series. I loved how the layers were peeled back from the characters as the story progressed. Look forward to reading the next book when it is released.
