Despite watching pretty much every crime procedural going, and the genre forming a not-small part of my reading choices, I'd somehow never read the Midsomer Murders books. This was a solid read - actually somewhat darker than the TV show, which was a pleasant surprise.

A very complicated murder showing that Miss Marple is right - a small town is just as rife with horrible crimes and sins as any large city. Barnaby is a delight and has some surprising depth for a genial sort of British detective. Especially for a first appearance. Troy is... Well, he's got inferiority issues and probably should not have a badge (thank goodness, the British police aren't given guns). I hope he grows up.
I will admit that it was a little weird how the POV was more omniscient than anything. In fact, it often jumped between heads within the span of sentences.

It starts out with a friendly competition over orchids between friends. It ends in...death!
A fun read, although I did figure it out pretty early due to writer cues (rather than logical puzzle-solving). Good characters; the plot went a lot darker than I expected without being hateful about its setting, which was nice. Clear writing but for a few transitions between characters near the end, but that may have been a formatting/line break issue in my edition. P.D. James lite? A good read.
