A visual archive of my favorite movie. It was so comforting to revisit the movie through the new images and the stages of development that led up to Tangled.

We're still into The Art Of books at bedtime, with copies of a few of the girls favorite movies of the moment ILL'd. I really liked reading this one, because I didn't know anything about shape stories and found it fascinating how elements from Cinderella & Pinocchio were used to create parts of Tangled.

This is easily one of my favorite art books that I've purchased. The primary reason that this is such a beautiful book is because of how much art was there. That might sound funny, considering art books should have lots of art in them, but you'd be surprised how many of them are lacking in development sketches, progression from the original designs to the final take, and really just pictures. One of the bigger let downs I'd had was with the Frozen art book which is over run with background shots and text and seems to only give the characters a few pages of thought. This however is completely different experience.
I've noticed a trend in art books lately trying to blend pictures and blocks of text about the process of creating the film. While I'm obviously interested in the story and how it came to be, in some cases the art takes second fiddle to the description of the animators or directors vision or process. With Tangled I was actually left wanting more. The text included was not only insightful and funny, there was still a huge emphasis on the art itself, and it complimented the drawings really well.
Hands down though, this book is amazing for it's rough sketches. Glen Keane did much of the design for this film and knowing his work on Ariel and Tarzan and Pocahontas, his sketches are simply the best. There are several pages devoted to each character and the variety of the drawing styles is superb. I couldn't be happier with this book.

2020 review:
Beautiful book! The illustrations and design are amazing. Most of the information is pretty straightforward as it takes you through the creation of Tangled, but there are also a bunch of fun ancdotes in there. Definitely a must read for Tangled fans.
