The twist is the family does so to make sure the dead stay dead.
This book gave instant southern vampire mystery novel meets Buffy the vampire slayer vibes. The first few chapters were great and had me hooked.
Unfortunately the book has a great premise but ultimately poor execution.
The book has eight povs in just 370ish pages. This helped to progress the plot and really showed the events unfolding through the town from the different characters perspective. It gave the book a bit of a t.v. show vibe and I think this could be adapted well to the screen.
The downside is it made it difficult to develop the characters. At time the characters felt very 2D and flat. The author repeatedly described habits they have in order to give them some life but it felt gimmicky.
An older character is described eating hard candy at least 10 times. It reduced the characters to tag lines/habits rather than fleshed out people.
While there are 4 women in the family I didn't feel I got much of a sense of any of them. Luna the youngest at 15 felt like the MC at points. This gave the book a bit of a YA feel.
Luna's chapters were painful to read at times and the conversations with her friends felt very cringey.
The pov I enjoyed most was a deputy, which I wasn't expecting as I was mostly interested in the family dynamics.
The plot was predictable and felt to an extent like things I've read before. Characters made poor/unnecessary decisions just to make the plot move a long which is a pet peeve of mine.
The book is surprisingly gory. The horror element was well done and if you dont like graphic violence this book won't be your cup of tea.
The "big" fight scene the book builds to though is frankly rubbish. It's clunky and fails to hold suspense. The characters continue to make choices that make zero sense, till it's almost nonsensical.
This book really didn't hit the mark for me. It failed to adequately explore the relationships of the characters, show character development or explore the dynamics of small town 90's life.
The book was quick to read and finishes set up for a sequel. There were hints of something great to begin with but the book really fell apart towards the end for me.
I think this book would an okay pick for an older teen looking to explore horror.

My biggest complaint is that the pacing of every action scene was a bit all over the place, like the author didn’t have experience writing stories coming to a head and not just being characters hanging out, but overall, they worked.
