This is part of the Xuya series, but it could just as well be a standalone story, it doesn't feel especially connected to the other stories. I thought that perhaps this story would be the missing link to the origin of Xuya's brain-ships, but the story went a different way.

I really liked the underlying mythology and world building of this story, but it felt a little unfinished to me; far more in the wind-up than in the pitch. Still, de Bodard's blunt, sparse poesy and her imaginative mind always is worth reading.
