Now the book review. It’s a little different to the show in that the latter has added more plot and characters along with other adaptations but for the most part the storyline follows. If you’re interested this volume plays base for episodes 1-3 and ends on the cliffhanger at the party - my heat was in my throat!! It was just so lovely and amazing, I cannot wait to read more. Being a graphic novel, it is very easy and accessible to read and you could get though it in less than an hour. I, however, wanted to savour it as long as I could spending time examining the amazing drawings - especially the facial expressions which are PERFECT - fully comprehending all that’s going on so I spent about 4/5-ish hours on volume one. It was hard cause the story is so gripping but I want to fully embrace the beauty that is within these pages. And Nellie is sooooo adorable!!!!!
More a note I want to add about the show but also relevant to the books once I complete them. I’m a 22 year old gay man and, like many others, this show is very bittersweet to me. Whilst it is so lovely and heartwarming, you are literally watching two teenage boys fall in love and discover themselves - is there anything cuter? Don’t think so. But then again I feel a sense of jealousy towards the younger generation who have this whilst growing up and in school because I didn’t. I missed out on so many experiences and opportunities due to internalised homophobia, little representation (usually negative if there was) and just wanting to suppress that part of me. But why be bitter about things you can’t change? Looking on the bright side, the younger generation of queer kids and teens do have this and I so hope they will access it (read/watch) and understand themselves earlier unlike I did, to experience all the things that straight cis people can without feeling othered. Thank you Alice Oseman, you will save lives with Heartstopper.
