I really liked this book! I read it in one day when I called in sick. I love survival stories, and I see why this one was an award winner. It had a literary quality despite being a middle grade book. It also dealt with heavy themes, so definitely check the content warnings. It lost one star because, reading it as an adult, certain parts required too much suspension of disbelief. Overall though, I thought it was a pretty realistic portrayal of how a 13 year old would react in an emergency. I appreciated that he went into shock and did not take the "right" actions right away, but had to figure it out over time. The ending made sense, but I wanted more of the story, so I plan to check out the sequels.

My wife and I were talking about middle grade books we read and she mentioned Hatchet. It was not one of the one's I was introduced to via school.

A boy, 13, surviving alone in the wilderness? Sign me up.

I had to stop several times throughout the book and remind myself that even though I would have done things differently than Brian, that I'm a lot older and I'm also from the country.

I laughed at some of his exploits.
I hope the tornado took the moose.

I did eventually find the character a bit more relatable and just as I was doing that, it ended!

I've already picked up the other books in the series from the library. We'll see where we go next.

I read this book as a kid; 2nd or 3rd grade, and I remember really enjoying it... But man- rereading it as an adult hits SO differently.

Had me close to tears several times.

Powerful book, and will always be an inspiring classic.
