This book became an instant classic and favorite of mine. The writing is so strange and wonderful. While the end isn't a sudden twist exactly, it is a slow revelation throughout the novel that fascinated and horrifies. Merricat is a girl I keep with me in my heart.

"Merricat, said Connie, would you like a cup of tea?
Oh no, said Merricat, you’ll poison me.
Merricat, said Connie, would you like to go to sleep?
Down in the boneyard ten feet deep!"

I didn't like the writing at all and it was easy to know who poisoned the family from the very beginning. i read it quickly just so I could be done.
