I went into this wanting to feel all the cozy feels, and by the end of the book, I think I got to the desired cozy level.
What I liked:
- the characterization of the Queen - she was just as I imagine she might be IRL: smart, direct, thoughtful, witty, loyal, warmer than you expect
- sneaking an insider type peek into the workings of palace life
- every scene with HRH and Philip
- Rozie Oshodi: I look forward to getting to know her better in subsequent books, she is whip smart and tough
Howevers
- uneven pacing
- elements of the mystery were a bit hard to keep track of at times
- I’d have liked even more face time with HRH. Every scene she was in was satisfying.
So I’ll be happily reading on as this series continues. I hope there are more Corgis, more references to the family, more tea and cocktails, and most of all more time with Lillibet.

I just love the idea of the Queen pottering around solving crimes. I really enjoyed this one, the characters are brilliant, the mystery kept me guessing, it was funny and emotional. I'll definitely be reading more in this series.
Graphic: Death, Drug use, Grief, Murder, and Violence

This felt like a really low-anxiety Louise Penny novel - a great break from the world at large. It's a bit of a stretch in my brain to imagine the Queen as a detective, but with her unparalleled time on the throne I wouldn't be surprised if she helped other less competent people solve mysteries. The initial death in the novel reminded me of Downton Abbey - the Turkish gentleman - but only slightly less scandalous.
