One day I will read a romance series in the order it is meant to be read, but today is not that day. But even given my tendencies to jump into a romance series halfway through, I really loved this book. I love a good comeback story, especially when the thing someone is coming back from is their own self doubt and a lifetime of not being diagnosed for ADHD and being blamed for not being neurotypical. Alyssa Cole creates such wonderful heroines and Portia was no exception.

Is it grounded in any kind of royal reality? Absolutely not, and that's what I loved. I love this vaguely alternate universe of royalty and cannot wait to delve into the rest of the series.

I really wanted to like this one, because I really loved A Princess in Theory, but this one just didn't do it for me. It was a slow burn in not the best way, and honestly I didn't root for Portia in the first book and this dragged on so long that I didn't find myself rooting for her or Tav here either (though I will say she is much better here). I'm excited for the next installment of the series though!
