The second installment in Reluctant Royals is almost as enjoyable as [b:A Princess in Theory|35271238|A Princess in Theory (Reluctant Royals, #1)|Alyssa Cole|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1501702014l/35271238._SY75_.jpg|56629976], but the fact that the couple more or less falls in love at first sight, but fights their attraction throughout most of the book, gets tedious. Still and all, the lovers are compelling and unpredictable characters, and again, I like the way Cole structures her novels. What you think is the climax comes mid-book, and you wonder what she'll do for the rest of it, but there's plenty of action.

First read by Alyssa Cole and wow I loved it. It was really relatable to my own life and just overall a fun read! I can't wait to read her other books in the series!

3.5 stars.

Not as fulfilling in some ways as the first one of the series, I still really enjoyed A Duke by Default. The chemistry, so carefully crafted in the first novel between Thabiso and Naledi, while not missing in this second installment, definitely takes a back seat to Tavish and Portia's glaring personal baggage.

Despite being quite different to Portia, I related to a lot of her insecurities and her people pleasing nature. Also the chemistry was fantastic between her and Tavish!!
My main gripes were that the second half felt more rushed than the first half and there was less sword making/sword fighting than I hoped.
Would definitely recommend (and now I really really want to visit Scotland)!!

I really loved the first book in this series and maybe I went into this with high expectations because wow this was such a disappointment. It was a slow burn romance and I was enjoying it but then the last 40% really went downhill. It wrapped up way too fast and a lot of the conflicts throughout the story were just left hanging.
How has Portia who sees a therapist not been diagnosed with ADHD? It really bugged me that Tavish was the Duke of Edinburgh because that's literally the queens husbands role. It would have worked way better if the author had invented a duchy, also he was illegitimate and so wouldn't have inherited anyway. We don't see anything happen with the villain nor do we see any kind of closure with Portias parents. I just felt like there were a few chapters missing and I was left feeling frustrated and disappointed.
