The Stonewall Reader is made up of an interesting collection of voices that clearly and passionately illustrate what happened at the Stonewall Inn and the significance thereof.

An important collection. Like most readers some pieces were stronger than others. It’s a great insight into the times before, during, and after Stonewall. I got a bit bored with it because the short pieces made it hard to engage with the topic. It also starts to get a little repetitive by the end. I think I’d prefer a deep dive into the subject and history over this.

Personal accounts of the Stonewall Riots

This anthology of the Stonewall Riots is broken into 3 sections: before, during, and after the riots. The stories are deeply personal accounts of the stigma, harassment, pain and isolation experienced by LGBTQ individuals and how the Stonewll Riots not only helped changed societies perceptions but their own perceptions of themselves as well. The voices have to be read as a product of their time with an understanding of how different identities such as trans and queens and racial experiences were understood and intersected in the environment surrounding the riots
