Wasn't looking forward to reading it anymore. It was heavy on the beautiful prose, light on the plot, to the point of feeling disconnected

Took me a bit to get into and the political parallels with today are intriguing as well as dark. Favorite parts were with Diego and Frieda and his role as stenographer. Once the communist fanatics began the pace quickened considerably and kept me captivated. Upon reflection it really didn’t seem all that cohesive - almost like novelettes inside a novel - and it took me a loooong time to finish it!

Very different from the other books I read, but beautiful. The pace is slow, but the way Kingsolver takes you to a different time and place is so well done.
