This book kind of reminded me of the Star Wars prequels. Put your pitchforks down please. Interesting characters (or, well, interesting enough to analyze) and worldbuilding, but the dialogue isn’t fantastic. He clearly doesn’t know how women and kids talk so I’m sorry to his wife and children that he must have never listened to. Overall, it was an enjoyable read. Plot was nothing too exciting and really dragged at points.

For me, it lived up to all the hype. There were so many conflicts going on at once that there was always excitement going on. I think that the religious and political overtones got their message across.

Cons:
1. I'm not super imaginative so even though the world building was great and I bought into it I struggled to imagine even simple things like stillsuits.
2. The first 100 or so pages are mostly setup and they can be difficult to get through. Once you push past that it really picks up.

After sitting with this book for a long time, and annotating it fully to get my thoughts out, it has become evident that this a 1 star book. Worldbuilding…good (although as a science major the ecology in this book is absolute shit). Anything else that is supposed make up a book (characters, pacing, writing, plot, etc) was not only mediocre but truly horrendous. This book is the definition of telling not showing. Frank Herbert refused to allow a single drop of nuance in this book. So open your gullet and read this book if you love being spoon fed terrible writing!

Although there are many brilliant aspects to this book, such as the imaginative worldbuilding and the commentary on imperialism and environmentalism, I just found this book to be far too androcentric. Everything revolves around men (particularly tropes of "strong" and "weathered" men). Even the female characters exist only in relation to how they serve men, either as child rearers or through the trope of the female manipulator. For all it's incredible worldbuilding etc., the book was remarkably unimaginative in how it formulated gender dynamics.
