Beetles are beautiful! Even if the thought of bugs gives you the shivers. Jenkins uses paper to sculpt beetles and share interesting, astounding, and amazing facts.
Themes: beetle parts, senses, battling, growth, plant eaters, hunters/scavengers, communication, chemicals, disguises, movement, size
Characters: beetles
Artwork: torn- and paper-cut collage
Author's Note: page, beetle size, common name, Latin name, location
Reviewed from a library copy.

B=Beautiful illustrations but kind of gives me the creeps looking at the beetles with some being as big as my hand.

AWESOME. I was captivated (and somewhat horrified) and so was my 6 year old. It is not often we are enthralled by the same book.

I had no idea there were so many beetles until I read The Beetle Book! The pictures are sure to draw readers in!

So informative and the illustrations are amazing, and yes, beautiful. But that didn't stop me from being grossed out. To be honest, that's probably an added bonus for all those inquisitive boys and girls out there.
A must for any library.

It is an interesting book, but I wonder who the intended audience is?
The scattered text forces the eye to rove the page without a particular pattern. There’s a lot of text in comparison to the illustrations to look at, and I wonder how successful this book would be for read-alouds. (Admittedly, I read this book to myself, an adult).
I can see kids getting into beetles and wanting to learn the cool facts in this book—but would they pick up a “kids book”? If they do read this one by themselves, would they struggle with the small text and scraggly font?

Everything you've ever wanted to know about beetles. This book is chock full of information, illuminated by [a:Jenkins'|27541|Steve Jenkins|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1365481570p2/27541.jpg] clever, schematic and beautiful paper cutout illustrations. I personally suffered some information overload leafing through this, and I would have appreciated a chapter index at the front, but my son couldn't get enough of digging into this book. And there is a detailed index of the beetles covered at the end. The book is organized thematically, with one page spread looking at beetle sizes, another at their body parts, colors, senses, camouflage, defenses, growing, etc ... Definitely a book to borrow again!
