It took forever to get to anything worth reading (for me at least) there was too much “fluff” in between that just didn’t interest me. I liked the second book so much more. Wasn’t a fan of the “each chapter is from one persons point of view.” The ending was kinda “meh” too...whiny teen romance anybody?

this! fucking! series!

evangeline got even greater, i loved her during the first two books and then THE FACT THAT SHE'S A LESBIAN came to light and i was like whoops, damn, love her more than i did before.

and maven, i am so invested it hurts and all that stuff about elara messing with his head (literally) broke my heart into a million pieces, and the line about wondering who maven would have been if it hadn't been for her broke my heart into a billion pieces.

i also love mare more than before too, i love her SO MUCH and just want the next book asap.

going into this i thought this was just the end of a trilogy so now that i know there's more to come i am so PUMPED

okay. this was better than the second one, in my opinion, even though I gave it the same rating. the beginning of this book started off strong, and it was really interesting to read, but eventually, I thought it got kind of bland. after a certain point in the book, I suddenly found myself not wanting to read it as much. but that being said, in no way was it bad. I simply think this series needs more action to combat the "boring" elements of the story, which is why it got hard to continue. (the first book was very good at keeping it entertaining)
the ending wasn't even bad, either. it definitely created a good setup for the next book, but im not sure if im going to read war storm. sometimes, it felt like there was a lot of back and forth in this book, and that's not just because of the split perspective because I really liked that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there was too much sitting and talking compared to actually doing.

2017: Well...SHIT THAT ENDING WHY

Updated review 2024:

this book has a special place in my heart. I read it deep into my dystopian 2010s phase and now I'm back in that nostalgic rabbit hole again.
I love the developments with Evangeline and how much we get to learn about maven. The halfway point feels like it should be the end and what comes after that is as unbearably dull and pointless as book two. Fascinating how that works when the first half has mare literally imprisoned. This is definitely why after years later, I only remembered the parts with maven and evangeline. They're really holding this book together with everything they have. The bathtub scene with maven and the scene with Evangeline and the manicles are FANTASTIC and electric in how they're written.

The only good parts in the second half are Evangeline's POV and the last several chapters. Cameron's POV was clearly used so we could know more about what happens in the scarlet guard while mare is in captivity, but she herself offers nothing of interest. I wish we had Farley's POV instead. She is a much stronger and better written character. I guess she just knows too much? The issue is that when we're only given Cameron's limited POV, it's quite dull. She's clearly there for plot alone, and maybe if mare dies lol. I still think cal and mare are annoying and I honestly think it would make the most sense if one of them dies. I wouldn't care to be honest. They're so infuriating and have the most uninspiring romance, I barely care. But I think the ending is sort of interesting, if slightly predictable, and I've finally caught up to read the final book. Interested to see where this goes. I also think maven should have a POV, but that might reveal way too much. However, that would revitalize the pulse of the books. Having Evangeline as a POV is still great though.

I'm predicting that cal dies in a final bittersweet battle with his brother, and with them both goes the last hope for the old ways in the monarchy. Either that, or mare will die killing maven and cal will completely change his way of thinking. Let's see what happens.
