I really enjoyed the world building, and the exploration of each character as individuals as well as their group dynamics. the perspective taking of the chapters was also interesting, and the narrators all added nuance to their performances in ways I appreciated (especially during internal monologues). unfortunately Part 6 definitely got too trigger heavy for me, and I found the expositions started to get both much longer and much less believable. not the book for me, unfortunately!

If this book had been around in 2014, it would've had a CHOKEHOLD on Tumblr.

Oof.

My 15 year old, dark academia aesthetic, tumblr addict self would have eaten this up. Unfortunately, reading it now it’s just too pretentious and self-important for me. This book uses so many words to say not that much, and doesn’t make a whole ton of sense in the end.

Not much actually happens in this book, which I’m generally fine with. The point seems more to slowly unravel our characters and how we got to this point. However I didn’t even begin to remotely care about any character until well past halfway. They all just seem kind of the same, except in the ways we are explicitly told they are different.

I get it, I really do. I understand why people love this book but I was let down after all the hype

The Atlas Six is nothing like I have ever read before.  It's about a secret society, knowledge, and power.  The six characters selected have different abilities and two of the characters (Libby and Nico) already know each other.  I loved seeing Libby and Nico's complex relationship develop.  There were so many things that happened in the book but the story was easy to follow and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really wanted to like this book. I like the idea of everything. It sounds so good conceptually, but it just fell flat. There's no real world development. The magic system is very vague which pushed me to the point of not caring about it. This is kind of like a bottle-mystery episode of a tv show.
I did end up finishing it and I thought the ending was probably the best part. The group goes through several little revelations but that are kind of explained but they aren't impactful or meaningful because you aren't invested in the characters. The characters were just kind of 2d. I wanted to like them but even their flaws were lacking in depth.
The main thing is that there are hints at a different world but not any evidence. The magic which initially drew me in, lacked luster and any concrete definition. The characters individual specialties were eventually discussed and that was kind of interesting but the mechanics behind the magic while explained were not very relevant to understanding.

It felt like this book was setting up a series. Characters are super in their own heads, and yet I’m still not sure what their motivations are and have a hard time empathizing with them. The world was so interesting and it felt like an unexplored opportunity. The plot was very slow, and not much really happened. I wanted more action and less philosophizing, and I still can’t decide if I am even rooting for any of the characters.
