Anyone reading without context might find it repetitive. Maybe a quick google or AI search to familiarise oneself with the background and setting would help empathise better. The fact that similar things seem to happen to characters is testament to how oblivious we have become to women’s issues and how rampant they still are. This is the kind of book that can’t be rushed through. I’m glad that the translator hasn’t italicised any of the words. It means more research to be done personally, but that adds to the reading experience, than taking away from it.

The prose is fantastic, and the translator have done an amazing job at capturing the essence and context of the stories. I really did feel I was right there.
I think I would have enjoyed this even more if I took my time. Maybe I should have read one story a week, kept a diary and made a project of it. Sadly, the way I read it made it feel a little like a chore, and at times I became annoyed at the repetitive nature of the stories.
Even if I liked this, I don’t agree with it being the best out of the International Booker Prize shortlist. In my mind, several of the others stand out as more worthy winners. However, I can see where the jury is coming from, with the world being as it is. I’m very glad to have read it.
