Generally don’t love short stories, but I like most of them, especially the one with the three boys spending the summer together. Really liked all the perspectives each story told.

Picked this based on the title, not clear what the theme is. Most were awkward and painful to read.
Fav - the one where the young boy has college boys watch him for a summer
Hated - the 14-yr old babysitter getting assaulted, the gay man meeting up with his old roommate, single moms on vacation with their daughters, the entire story The Man At the Door.

"Women are at their best when they write about men." I thought it was strange how many stories only had men in it.

It was nice to read short stories again. They make for entaining short breaks in a busy week.

Although I did not like all 10 of them, I feel like many of the stories will stay with me for a long time. They share some running themes like writing, parenting and getting over a past relationship. My favorites were:

1) Five Tuesdays in Winter
(about second love, fatherhood and bookshops)

2) Waiting for Charlie
(about an old man looking back on life)

3) Timeline
(about a writer, her brother and their neighbours)

These stories are so messed up. I didn’t read the last few of course since I stopped at 72%, but I finally decided to free myself from the chaos and misery. There was one story about a father, daughter and stepmom that was somewhat endearing, but otherwise yuck. I do have a little trouble with short stories because I never know don’t know what I’m getting into but this collection was not for me. I would not recommend it.

this book of short stories was so good? each short story was so beautifully done. lovers of sally rooney would adore this book. it has a similar mix of imperfect characters and stories that are unfinished, almost as if we were simply glancing into their life for short periods of time and then moving on to the next.

Each story was its own kind of tragic and beautiful. It never ends the way you expect it to. I often found myself gasping and having to put it down for a moment to recollect myself.

My favorite definitely was When in Dordogne. It hit so close to home.
The not knowing they loved each other until later on, the promise of seeing each other again, knowing it's the last time you will see this person but not realizing until years later, it all just hit so deeply i had to put the book down to take a few deep breaths because i was so overwhelmed with emotions  :')

this book had so many stories and perspectives and tones that it DID NOT feel like 200 pages? it felt like i've been reading for forever..

imo, it deserves five stars. I understand the povs of other readers who did not enjoy the book and its ambiguity in the endings but as a sally rooney fan, this was exactly my cup of tea :>
