I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I borrowed this on a whim and was launched into so many different lives. The stories were thought provoking and stayed with you after finishing them.

This is a collection of short stories from different perspectives conveying tales of love, loss and growth. All of these centre around the narrator and their experience and interactions with other characters with a range of emotions such as love, hope, fear and anger. A consistent theme throughout is the impact people have on others and the way they shape them as an individual and their life; whether through a positive or in a terrible way. Death is also mentioned in a few of the stories and the vulnerability of life just like humans and their emotions which can affect and alter their reality.

I like how Lily King shows the importance of accepting who you are but also accepting what had happened, even in the hardest of the stories, that acceptance was cathartic and peaceful. Some of these short stories have a happy ending, some end on a more somber note but all have a very clear message about people and real life situations whether they’re showing the best in humanity or the worse. King presents these short stories in a concise way, building up the plot in a way to create mystery with the different paths the plot could take before the end.

Many thanks to Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very tricky book to rate since there are alot of stories and you might like some and hate some but I decided on a 2 star since the stories  I didn't like were alot more than those I liked. Almost all the stories were an open end and this annoyed me so much especially since some of them had to have a conclusion not to be left like this. Also what I was looking for when I got into for the stories to make me feel something whether it's fluffiness. Sadness anything but what I only felt was disgust really the topics were so bad. So I guess this wasn't for maybe some people like this way of writing and all but I couldn't digest it at all.

I am not a big short story reader as I typically like to spend a whole book getting to know characters. However Lily King is one of my favorite authors so I had to give these a try. I certainly enjoyed some stories more than others. I like King’s writing style as she has a great ability to paint a scene and conjure nostalgia. I personally liked the titular story the most.

It was nice to read short stories again. They make for entaining short breaks in a busy week.

Although I did not like all 10 of them, I feel like many of the stories will stay with me for a long time. They share some running themes like writing, parenting and getting over a past relationship. My favorites were:

1) Five Tuesdays in Winter
(about second love, fatherhood and bookshops)

2) Waiting for Charlie
(about an old man looking back on life)

3) Timeline
(about a writer, her brother and their neighbours)
