Cassidy Bent tried to spend the last year of her life distancing herself from her fellow victims of a catastrophic accident. When she learns that one of them has unexpectedly died, she decides she needs to be with the rest of the survivors...that maybe it's not safe to be alone. This thriller is told in alternating chapters-the present day and a backwards account of the crash that took 12 of their classmates' and teachers' lives. The storytelling is really well done. There were a couple of twists that I saw coming, but a couple that caught me by surprise. A really fun thriller about identity and guilt.

I was expecting the reveal to be so much bigger, and instead it ended up being exactly what I thought it was going to be. I was a bit bored about halfway through and had to push myself to finish it, but unfortunately the ending was not worth it. I didn't really enjoy it and I'm not sure if I would recommend it.
Edit: while comparing to my other 3 star books, I realized this is a 2!

This is only my second Megan Miranda read. The first was All the Missing Girls, and I remember loving how it was organized and being so entranced. I have a few others of hers in my bookcase that I plan to get to, but after this one, it might be a little while.
Possibly the most beautiful cover of late, but it was too much of a slow burn for me. I liked the organization, with the book taking the course of a week, each day its own section closing with a flashback to the day their lives changed forever. Each flashback was an hour countdown to the mysterious event that caused them to wreck on a high school volunteer trip and lose several classmates and teachers.
I got lost with the number of characters introduced. There were too many in the survivors group, but then a handful of others were introduced on the side and ultimately, I don't know that most served a purpose. I also found it interesting that the survivor who was now like a social media fitness influencer -- her character's outfit was always described and judged. Idk why that bothered me so much, but I knew more about her leggings than I did three of the other people combined.
The story is narrated by Cassidy who cuts ties with the group before their annual trip to the beach. She is contacted by a mysterious number the week before with the obituary of one of the former survivors, the one who she was closest to before setting boundaries. Prompted to reunite with her former classmates and grieve together, she heads to the beach house trying to figure out who texted her, where their friend Amaya ran off to, and what all the neighbor down the road knows.
This is like 2.5 stars.
