I don't usually care for .5 ratings, but I have to give this one 3.5 / 5 stars. The beginning was great. I was really into the story and the characters and the descriptions of the town, and the action began soon after the book started. About halfway through, I began to feel like the author just started slacking off. The quality of the plot, the dialogue, the descriptions of new characters, everything, just seemed off. And for about ¼ of the book, that really silly and annoying part of some YA novels where a female heroine who is a complete mess keeps trying to convince herself that she can save the world while doing really dumb things happens happened. I was pretty annoyed with some of the characters for a good part of the book. The ending was great, and I felt like all issues were resolved. I will say that there's a lot more language and partying in this book than most YA books, so if you're a parent of a YA reader, something to be aware of.

Very cute fairy story, with likable characters, and good intrigue. If you like Cruel Prince this book is a good addition to Holly Blacks world of Faerie. You can tell she matured as an author since writing Tithe, which is bit too grimy for my taste, though I appreciate the foundations it laid.

This story follows a brother and sister that lives in a town with fairies. A Prince sleeps in a glass casket, a channeling is a best friend and deep in the depths of the forest a monster so fearsome, that feeds on sadness resides.

It's a wonderful magical realism tale on a magical creatures that live with community and how that affected their day to day life.

One of our main character, Hazel, that desperately wants to be a knight. Her brother that wants to be in love and play music and their friend that battles with the desire to be normal and being different.

One of the things I like about this book is the diversity. It was really refreshing to have a person of color as one of the main love interest, yes! That gave me so much joy! It was awesome to have a woman that wanted to be a knight and took up the mantel to save the town, save her parents, save her brother and save the prince! It was awesome to have gay character have a happy ending....that's all I'll say! Yay!

At the start of the book it got really confusing. There was point where I felt like too many things were going on and nothing made a lick of sense. Also, though this was multi pov, it was mostly in Hazel's pov and when it wasn't in Hazel's pov, the other characters were talking about her. Unfortunately, it made get annoyed of her for a large part of the book, especially since there was an epic love story going on and we hardly got to see any of it!

Still, this was a good book on discovering the many different layers of yourself. Loyalty and friendship.

4/5 stars.

Honestly Holly could write a fanfic abut and random celebrity and I’d still read it. Jk but seriously this book was just packed with advent and it wasn’t too long the pacing was good the plot twist HAD ME. I was gagged and I was shocked and I definitely love this book!
