Ο Κρος τρώει μια φρίκη γιατί η Κριστίν τον χωρίζει εξαιτίας της δουλειάς του και τον αφήνει αμανάτι με τρία παιδιά (ένα εκ των οποίων υποτίθεται ότι θα το μεγάλωναν μαζί).
Φυσικά πριν πάρει ανάσα, αρχίζουν τα χαστούκια, με μια σειρά από ληστείες τραπεζών «υψηλού προφίλ» στην πρωτεύουσα των ΗΠΑ, που ακολουθούνται και από από μαζικές δολοφονίες και σημειώματα για λύτρα. Γενικώς χάος. Το χρηματοπιστωτικό σύστημα τα έχει κάνει απάνω του (πολύ περισσότερο από όταν μερικοί γραφικοί σχημάτησαν την «Occupy Wall Street»), ο κόσμος δεν κοτάει να βγει από το σπίτι και γενικώς η διασάλευση της εννόμου τάξεως έχει πάρει τον κατήφορο.
Ο Κρος και η σύντροφός του Σάμ(π)σον ρίχνονται στην έρευνα, ενώ έχει και τη μάλλον απροσδόκητη βοήθεια του FBI καθώς μια οικογένεια διευθυντή τράπεζας δολοφονείται άγρια, μετατρέποντας την υπόθεση σε «υψηλού προφίλ» (δε μας αφορά η πλέμπα, κοινώς), ενώ ο suave μπήχτης Κρος (βήχω λίγο) δε χάνει χρόνο και τσιμπιέται με την FBIού Καβαλιέρε.
Το έγκλημα συνεχίζει να οργιάζει, αγνοώντας τις πεταλούδες στο στομάχι του Κρος με αποκορύφωμα τα 30.000.000 που χάνει το ξενοδοχείο Mayflower (μέρα Μαγιού με λήστεψες…) από (κυρίως) κοσμήματα.
Κάπου εδώ η ομάδα ανακαλύπτει μια μορφή μοτίβου στις ληστείες, που συνήθως καταλήγουν με τα λιμά που συμμετείχαν «βολικά πεθαμένα» (κανείς μάρτυς δεν είναι πιο σιωπηλός από ένα μάρτυρα σε θερμοκρασία δωματίου).
Φτάνουμε στην ανάκριση του Φρέντερικ Σάμπο, έναν τύπο με παρανοϊκή διαταραχή προσωπικότητας που φαίνεται εγκαφαλικά, αν και… όχι σωματικά, ικανός να σχεδιάσει αυτά τα εγκλήματα. Ο Szabo αναζητά εκδίκηση από τράπεζες και ασφαλιστικές εταιρείες που πιστεύει ότι κεφαλαιοποιούν τον πόνο των άλλων (κάτι μας είπες τώρα…) και τους αξίζει να τιμωρηθούν αξίζουν να τιμωρηθούν, Ωστόσο είναι προφανές ενώ ο Σάμπο καταστρώνει σχέδια να γλείφεις τα δάχτυλά σου, δεν έχει τα μέσα να τα πραγματοποιήσει ΣΕ ΑΝΤΙΘΕΣΗ ΜΕ ΤΟ ΓΙΑΤΡΟ ΤΟΥ (;;; ) Δρ Φράνσις. Ο Κρος και Καβαλιέρα του πείθονται ότι ο ντοτόρε είναι πίσω από τις επιθέσεις, αλλά είναι ακόμα νωρίς και πρέπει να γράφτεί και άλλο βιβλίο, οπότε με ένα τουίστ το επίκεντρο της πλοκής στρογγυλοκάθεται πάνω στον στον Κάιλ Κρεγκ, τον ήσυχο συνεργάτη του Κρος, το καλό φιλαράκι βοηθάει στην έρευνα.
Το βιβλίο κλείνει αφήνοντας τα πάντα ανοιχτά, και ενώ Κρος και Καβαλάρισσα στρέφουν την προσοχή τους στον Κρεγκ και ό,τι τους έκανε αρχικά να παραβλέψουν πιθανή συμμετοχή/ενοχή του.

Ok listen, I love to clown on James Patterson, maybe more than anyone else. I need to establish that off the bat to keep any shred of credibility. I read his books because they're fun garbage that I can barely pay attention to and distract myself. Patterson novels are my Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon (for the Murderbot fans). They are never good, and but they keep me company when I'm stressed and can't focus on something more serious.
That said.... this was kind of good??
Don't get me wrong, it has all the same tropes as the rest of the Alex Cross series. The blown-out trope of a murderer. The hot young detective love interest who. I should be clowning on this as much as I did all the rest.
And yet... This one kept me hooked. I read this in 2 days on a plane and hotel room, and barely put it down. The twists and turns were not as predictable as they usually are. I absolutely did not see the final twist coming, which I imagine will set up another multi-book arc.
One note on the "romance" (read: smut). This one more than most of the rest felt extremely procedural. Some of the other novels in the series have had more interesting love interest story lines that had decent emotional payoffs. This one felt like it was tossed in because "I dunno, it's an Alex Cross novel, he has to bang at least one young hotshot detective or the publisher won't take it". Comes out of left field early on and never feels real. You could cut every single scene between the two of them out and the book would be completely unchanged, except that it might be a little less cringey.
I can't in good conscience give this 5 stars. It's still an Alex Cross novel, there's a lot wrong with it. But if you know what you're getting yourself into (and I hope you do 6 books into the series), then this is a solid delivery on the arc of the series, and writes a lot of checks that Patterson can easily pay off to great effect in future novels. I can't believe I'm saying this, but 4/5
