Midnight Target had a lot of expectation attached. It's a romance novel and an action novel. It's got, not one, but two romantic arcs. On top of that, it's also the last book in the series while also being a standalone. Even thinking about all that makes me nervous, and Elle Kennedy has managed to balance all these things so well...

And don't even get me started on the fact that she had to do Sully and Liam's story justice. Seriously, Elle Kennedy had been teasing their book since [b:Midnight Pursuits|18141688|Midnight Pursuits (Killer Instincts, #4)|Elle Kennedy|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1379736423s/18141688.jpg|25487888], which is book 4. I love Liam and Sullivan and I was dying to finally get their book. Sure, I cared about the other couple, Cate and Ash, as well. But Liam and Sully are my favourite couple of the series, right up there with Kane and Abby ([b:Midnight Rescue|12368900|Midnight Rescue (Killer Instincts, #1)|Elle Kennedy|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1324661720s/12368900.jpg|17349172]).

But anyway... this series follows a team of mercenaries led by Jim Morgan. Four years ago, Morgan was finally able to find his estranged daughter. But his overprotectiveness kept driving her away. She's now a freelance photographer, and when her job lands her in trouble, Jim is there to help. But he gets gravely injured in the process. Now Jim's entire team are rallying for payback, including Liam Macgregor and Sullivan Port, who were once best friends and will meet again after two years and address all the things between them, that they didn't before.

And I'm gonna be honest here, before starting the book, I didn't much care for Ash and Cate. I was interested, but not nearly as much as I was in Liam and Sully. But after I started reading, I was surprised to find that I cared about them and their relationship almost as much as... you know who.

I've already said that all the various elements of the novel were very well-balanced but I'm elaborated a little. Both the romances were given their time, all the different perspectives were well placed, the pace of the story was really good and I couldn't put the book down. Seriously, I'm reviewing the book now, but I read it the day it came out, in one sitting. And then I read it again the next day. And then I went through every scene with you-know-who about two more times.

It's just, the scenes with Liam and Sully were just so great! How could I not read them over and over? With Ash and Cate, I felt that their initial conflict was a tad stretched, but not much. I just wish we'd gotten more of you-know-who. Clearly, I have an obsession.

Overall, I loved this last installment. The book was brilliant and wrapped the series up really well. I read the epilogue like half a dozen times. I'm very happy with how the series concluded. That said, can't we get a few more books? Pretty please? I'm really gonna miss these characters and I highly recommend that you give them a shot. They, and their stories, are all so totally worth it.

If you haven't year this series, stop and go back to the beginning and read them!

It's been a long time coming but we finally have Cate and Ash's story. Bonus we get Sullivan and Liam's too!

Cate finds herself in need of immediate extraction and the S@*+ hits the fan from there. Fighting the cartel and dealing with a critically injured Jim Morgan has all hands on deck. The story has multiple plot twists and suspense.
There's enough chemistry between the two sets of lovers as they fight the attraction that it might set you Ereader or book on fire.
I couldn't put it down until I was finished reading. Thank you Elle for making your characters feel so real.

Don't pick this up if your squeamish about M/M, guns, drugs and death. But then why are you reading this series then anyway?

Action packed, two romances, plus lots of details about previously discussed characters. What more can someone ask for? Loved every moment of it!

  | Loved that we finally get Liam and Sully’s story, along with Kate and Ash. One common thread between both these couples, hiding their feelings to protect themselves. The things they are protecting are different, but wow, they guard things well. The bad guy here, for some reason, I think he is the scariest of the series, and he made me shiver more than once. These couples learn passion cannot be contained, especially when there is heart behind it, and being happy means allowing their heart to show. It took quite a bit to get there, they held out until the very end, but it was so worth once it happened <3

Midnight Target brings an explosive end to a beloved Romantic Suspense series with two different love stories that tie up all the loose ends. This book, as with the rest of the books in this series, brings intense action and romance together to tell the love stories of mercenaries and their feisty, badass counterparts. Kennedy created one final villian for Jim Morgan's team to battle and in it we get both Cate and Ash, and Sully and Liam (whom we've been looooong desperate for) as they risk everything for one another.

One thing I have admired about this series is the way that Kennedy has mixed, with such ease, the two couples in each book, easily playing and teasing one while showing us the full story of the other. It has constantly given us something to look forward to even while we're still in the current story. Even without that here, because it's the end, the interweaving story lines were done so well. And these final two are important enders. Sully and Liam, both fighting their inner demons, have been denying an intense attraction since dang near when the series started. Theirs is most bittersweet; the soul-deep kind of love that has suffered for too long and is dying to be released. Repressed and forgotten, it is not without its bitter spikes. But the main story really lies within Morgan's daughter, Cate. Stifled and overprotected, her yearning for freedom has quite the dire consequence. While you may want to throttle her at times, Kennedy expertly depicted her character and found her perfect complement, the guy to soften her edges and set her free, in Ash.

My one concession was that, maybe because the Sully/Liam lead-up had been coming for so long, I really wanted more of the story with them rather than with Cate and Ash. But I think that's a personal issue that not every reader will experience, mainly because I was so invested in them and didn't feel completely satisfied with their screen time... but they did get a lot of screen time in other novels, so, I guess what I'm saying is that I'm very selfish when it comes to those two men. Nothing against Cate and Ash, of course, because I still really loved them.

With the entire crew back together and a whole host of deadly problems, it felt like coming home upon opening the pages of Midnight Target. Kennedy, with her suspenseful twists and turns, managed to blend not only romance and suspense together and two very different love stories, but she brought a bittersweet and beautiful end to a great series. It's the kind of story that refuses to be put down and I expected nothing less.
