Eleven-year-old Gilly Hopkins has been bounced back and forth between foster homes ever since she can remember. She knows how to get under people's skin, to cause trouble, and to get what she thinks she wants.
This is a children's book that I'm glad I read as an adult. I don't think the story of the difficult foster child and the humble, capable foster mother would have touched me much as a child. I probably would have been shocked and distracted by all the profanity—which is what our main character Gilly is trying to do when she speaks that way anyway.
I was so touched by foster mother Maime Trotter's fierce, gentle, nonchalant love. There are many kinds of intelligence, and Trotter has the knowhow to help Gilly. As a mother, there is a lot I can learn from her.
Content: Running away. Stealing. Racism. Lots of profanity. I personally felt it was justified in this book and not gratuitous, but I would recommend this book for older children or teens (10+).

به نظر من کاترین پترسون واقعا نویسنده خوبیه. البته این دومین کتابیه که ازش خوندم، ولی به هر حال کاملا من رو مجاب کرده که سراغ کارهای دیگه‌ش هم برم و فعلا همین کافیه.
این کتاب رو دوست داشتم. فکر کنم یکی از معدود کتاب‌های نوجوانی بود که من بزرگترهاش رو بیشتر از بچه‌هاش دوست داشتم. شخصیت اصلی اول کار خیلی رومخ بود، ولی کم‌کم خودش رو تو دل آدم جا می‌کرد. روند رشدش رو می‌دیدی و متوجه می‌شدی که چرا اولش طوری رفتار می‌کرده که خیلی جالب نبوده.
فکر می‌کنم بزرگترین ضعف کتاب، ظرفیت‌های ازدست‌رفته‌ش بود. شخصیت‌هایی مثل معلم گیلی یا اون دختره اگنس... اول که سروکله‌شون پیدا شد من حس کردم قراره بار داستان و تغییر شخصیت اصلی و همه‌چیز رو به دوش بکشن، ولی در واقع عملا هیچ تاثیری در پیشبرد داستان نداشتن. در مقابل شخصیت‌هایی مثل ویلیام‌ارنست و اون آقای پیری که اسمش رو یادم نیست رو داریم که واقعا در داستان نقش مهمی داشتن.
خلاصه که از خواندنش لذت بردم. یک ستاره‌ی اضافه هم برای تجربه باهم‌خوانی.

کاترین پترسون پایان‌های شگفت‌انگیزی می‌نویسه. با اینکه بسیار غمگین و کاملا واقع‌گرایانه‌ست، ولی بعد از اینکه کتاب رو می‌بندی، یک چیزی از کتاب همراهت می‌مونه.
گاهی وقت‌ها چیزی که آرزوش رو داری، واقعا همون چیزی نیست که می‌خوای.
خیال می‌کردم دوران گریه کردن با کتاب‌ها دیگه برام تموم شده ولی خوندن هر کتاب پترسون=یک عالمه اشک ریختن.
علاوه بر این‌ها، خود کتاب هم برام خیلی ارزشمنده؛ چون اولین کتابیه که توی هم‌خوانی با یه شخص خیلی عزیز خوندمش.
