When the book starts with a dedication to Nic Stone's grandmother for "basically letting us watch the Sandlot whenever they wanted", you have me hooked. Appreciate all the nods to old school songs about scrubs. Lots of really impactful issues couched in "a sports fiction book" just serve to make me a huge fan of Stone's j fic.

Not my most favorite book of Nic Stone's. It just seemed a little far-fetched that she didn't really know anything about her great-grandfather who played in the Negro Leagues and then she was able to solve the mystery about where the glove went that he supposedly stole and then she was able to clear his name. And why wouldn't she know anything about Uncle Jack, who was in a nursing home, when her parents would buy him groceries every week and drop them off?

I loved softball as a teen, so I was so excited to read this newest from Nic Stone, and it did not disappoint. It was a great mix of softball, social justice, racial history, friendship, and family.

I loved this sports mystery. It didn't shy away from tough conversations and those conversations were age-appropriate. The characters were interesting and honestly, I'm hoping for a sequel. Middle grade readers will love it, especially sports fans.

What a quick, powerful book about family, setting things right, and history. I loved the titles of the chapters and how everything was so connected to softball, yet also about life and racism. Must Read! Also...audiobook is narrated by the author so I highly recommend that version.

Really skillful mystery that is integrated with the main characters’ need to prove herself on the softball field. Interweaves friendship, family obligations, and racial issues in a very interesting and enjoyable read.

This is the perfect MG book for girls who like softball, mystery, learning about history and fighting for what’s right. This was my first foray into Nic Stone’s MS books and it did not disappoint! Fighting to set the story straight and clearing her Great Uncle’s name for something he didn’t do may become a distraction for Shenice, but it’s one she believes in with her whole heart. Learning a bit about the Negro League wants me to take a deeper dive into it’s history. Definitely promoting this one to sports, history & mystery buffs!
