What an accomplishment this book is. Absolutely exhaustive while also staying extremely readable, Ferrer does a fantastic job presenting the narrative of Cuban history while always reminding us that history is rarely that simple. It’s a book very much in the tradition of Howard Zinn (who she even quotes twice), often framing events by the way they affected the average Cuban on the ground. She focuses often on the experiences and tribulations of Afro-Cubans in particular, and the ways they’ve fought for equality. I simply cannot recommend it enough to anyone interested in the subject.

Great pace and narrative for non-fiction. Learned a lot I didn't know about US and Cuban history. I look forward to the authors future work.
