“We pray together and when it is time for us to ask for what our hearts desire, my first wish is that he remain steadfast in faith, and then if he does not, that he never believe that God is a being with a heart like a human's, capable of being small and vindictive.”

Writing and story were great. Book moved somewhat slow but I enjoyed learning about the dynamics and culture of this family and the struggles that many families deal with behind closed doors. Wish the ending would have been happier but enjoyed hearing the final thoughts of the father.

The view into a strict Muslim household was fascinating. Great writing. Too slow of a read for me.

Maybe 4.5 stars really. It is almost a 5 star book but the pacing is a little off in the 2nd part. It comes together so beautifully though in the 3rd part that it makes it all worth while. This is a gem of a book. My biggest complaint is that the middle child in the family is never given a chance to speak. We get interior perspectives to everyone except Huda. I found this book heartbreaking, moving, beautiful, and joyous.
