I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first. There were too many red herrings and so many things to follow. It was hard to remember some of the relationships between everyone.
I did still enjoy the direct-to-reader style. It adds a lot of humor to the story. I like the personalities and dynamics between a lot of the characters, particularly the main players from the first book.
It was still a lot of fun, but I think if I do a reread, it would be better if I read both books back-to-back.

This was a fun follow up to a book I really enjoyed last summer- Every Time I Go on Vacation Someone Dies. I think it relied too heavily on the first book though- you really had to remember the characters and situation, which I didn't, so there was some disconnect there for me. I don't want to have to re-read the previous book in a series because the next book relies so heavily on the plot- at least not in a cozy mystery.
This includes a large cast of characters that was a bit hard to keep straight as well.
I think there is good promise for book three if Mack can bring back a handful of characters and focus on a new mystery more instead of relying on past plots.
I love the footnotes, the humor, the quirky characters and will pick up book three for sure.

The characters are more like caricatures. They are just too over the top for me. The plot twists are overdone and the betrayal at the end is off the mark. Since El is supposed to know her best friend so well, including knowing her facial expressions that signal she needs help, it seems unbelievable that she would miss this major shift in morality. I tried to give it a chance through the end, but it just wasn’t able to recover.

I don’t know why I picked this up after I really didn’t enjoy the first one. I guess I thought I would enjoy it more because I already knew the characters? Unfortunately this one was just as pedantic with the excessive footnotes and over-explanation of every plot point.
