This is an odd book. One half of it is genuine useful tips for beginners; the other half is very detailed descriptions of every aspect of a bird's physiognomy. This book is simultaneously aimed at beginners and too advanced for them—I doubt beginners will need or understand detailed analyses of every type of feather. And, unfortunately, this book skimps on discussing behavior and life cycle—the things most useful to casual bird-watchers.

Good, helpful. I got really bogged down in the chapter on molting and I don’t think I understood a lot of it, but that might be a chapter to re-read sometime later.

learned a lot more about birds than I expected for a "basics" book, very dense with identification information on general bird behavior and appearance. I have the feeling that I'll need to revisit a lot of this information in the future as I continue to apply identification tips from the book in the field

I learned a lot reading this and think it will serve as a great reference going forward. That being said, some of the content didn't feel 'basic' and irrelevant for the novice birder.
