did you guys know a kennedy wrote this????
challenging informative

Blends humor and environmental journalism to give an overview of the impacts of our consumption. Does a good job considering how economies and environments are interconnected while staying accessible.

I read enough ~environmental news~ that this wasn't too surprising, but presented compellingly and still useful.

Thoroughly researched and very well written. A bit too into the weeds at times, but overall a great read.

Concrete changes Schlossberg inspires:

Wash jeans every fifth wear
(try to) buy fewer athleisure outfits
Carbon offset flights (myclimate.org)
Recycle electronics
Standard (rather than expedited) shipping so that fewer trucks/cargo ships travel at half capacity

Wish I had seen this book in 2020 instead

Listening on audio, I wished the entire time it'd been recorded by a professional narrator versus the author, but that's really beside the point. This exceeded my expectations. It surprised me that this didn't seem agenda-based in the sense of touting singular, right-wrong paths. This journalist instead provided a deep, equitable delve into the many interwoven, intricate cause-and-effect facets of the topics she researched. And gotta give bonus points for it NOT reading like research!

I learned a ton and now understand why the waters of information are so muddied. It's not black and white.

Im not rating this because of it being a non-fiction. It was a very insightful read though. Im trying to be more mindful of what waste I put into the world. The author makes the technical stuff easier to understand with a little bit of her personality sprinkled in which I related to. She talks about a lot of stuff that is of course already widely known like fast fashion, alternate fuels, gmo and organic crops, and of course plastic. What I thought made this interesting to me was that she also discussed what our technology does to the environment. Things like toxic waste from all the components of phones, computers, and the like, and the energy to produce those electronics I dont think people really think about. People need to stop buying the latest iphone. We are a supply and demand culture. I also liked that she touched on fish farms. You dont really need to wash your clothes after every wear. So any excuse to do less laundry I will take it! Less laundry, better sourced sushi, and more recycling with reputable places is one step that I think everyone can handle. We have to save our Earth!
